In an increasingly detached world where smartphone communication has supplanted face-to-face contact Austin takes us back to the wonder of the touch of skin. Her intimate ‘environmental portraits’ remind us how important the touch of our fellow man is to our souls. Soft focus & gently lit intimate tableaux draw us into and allow us to share in these tender moments. Yet, despite bearing witness to these private scenes we do not feel the voyeur, instead we feel grateful and jealous even as they remind us how we should cherish these brief moments when we have the chance to grasp them.
For my own project I would like to evoke a similar feeling of gentle intimacy to draw the viewer in; to sympathise with the ‘model’ and allow some of their gentle vulnerability to be captured on film in the hope of stirring the heart of the reader.
